THE SERIES

Water Botany is an exercise in style in which I explore the nature of colour, light and texture through a vibrantly tactile representation of Monet-like water lily and water lily ponds. The series draws on the art of the Impressionists but with a contemporary, expressive twist. The rich, layered brushstrokes make the interplay of light and shadow breaking on water tactile. The surface of the water is the canvas, where flowers, clouds and the quality of light all compete for their place on the lake, manifesting in a magnificent performance for the viewer.

The compositions suggest movement and life, with rippling reflections and abstract vegetation conveying an organic, almost dreamlike quality. In this otherworldly, ethereal space, colours and light move freely. Behind the texture of the thick layer of paint and the energy of the dynamic lines lies the calm, colourful world of the lake. Water Botany conveys the beauty of nature and the tranquillity of everyday life, echoing the timeless charm of Impressionist landscapes while infusing them with the fluidity of modern reality.
